Three Unique Career Tips

Published: 11/13/2019

The United States has just hit a low – a very good low. Our unemployment for May was a mere 3.8%. That’s the lowest it’s been in the last ten years I just reviewed.

What does that mean for you?

If you are looking for a job, push forward and be encouraged. The positions are out there. This doesn’t mean that everyone gets the job they want quickly. Finding that great fit still takes some time, and energy. You can do this.

If you are content in your position – good for you! Great employers know the status of the economy. It’s an ideal time to ask for any one of these things:

More training
A raise
Additional responsibility
Promotional opportunities

If you want to change jobs, consider when you want to move on and what you want in a new opportunity. There hasn’t been a better time to be a job seeker.  Here are some unique career tips for making your next job a great long term fit.

1. You are probably familiar with business guru Jim Rohn’s statement that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. Right now, start spending time with people who can encourage you to greater heights. People whom you admire. Individuals who get things done. Folks who support your aspirations.

2. How is your self-awareness? Your work relationships? Your self-management? It’s always a good time to read the book Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves. If you already have it, re-read it. I have done that multiple times and gained something every time I’ve dipped in again. This is an upward mobility changer when applied. It doesn’t matter what your job is, part of it is to get along well and communicate effectively with others.

3. Do you know what you want in a career? Many people don’t. While you are working at your current job, it’s the perfect time to:

Take career assessments.
Talk to a coach or mentor about your true desires. Note that it is more than okay for those desires to be unique to you. They should be.
Identify your passions for your work life.
Get clear on your life purpose.
Mentor a new person at your job. This can be very clarifying and satisfying.
Take a business course in an area you want to improve on. Self-education will not only improve you, it reflects well on your motivation.
