EPISODE 705: Stress and Mental Health = No Longer Taboo



How’s your mood these days? How are you truly feeling? A lingering effect from the pandemic is the mental stress people have been under for the last 17 months. The thrust of the physical impact of Covid-19 has affected the elderly and those with health complications the hardest, although no one was out of the reach of the virus’s grasp. Mentally, none of us are spared. Anxiety and depression impacts every part of our lives, and our work is a key driver that affects our mood.


It’s been a tough ride, but we are tough people. The silver lining is that folks are now talking about their stress and mental health challenges more openly. After decades of mental issues bearing a stigma that most weren’t willing to speak about, it’s now much more common to discuss in normal conversations. It’s no longer YOU have a mental health concern, WE do. Here’s some things we can do about it.

  • Consult a mental health professional or your Employee Assistance Program (EAP) through work.

  • Talk to your HR professional about Headspace for Work , Calm Business or something like those tools for work. They are science-backed meditation and mindfulness solutions for the workplace. Creating a workplace environment that recognizes, acknowledges, and promotes the importance of positive mental health is one of the most important things an employer can do to improve their organization.

  • Spend time safely with others. Loneliness and isolation are real issues. After we have spent so much time not being able to see other people, it’s important that we consciously reengage in that activity.

  • Check in and reach out to others.

  • Give unconditional love to yourself.

  • Spend time in nature and with animals or small children.

  • Share with people you feel safe with. Being vulnerable is a huge strength and it helps normalize the conversations around stress that are so helpful.

You aren’t powerless in hard situations like the struggles we’ve been having for the last year and a half. You can begin to change your mental reality for the better with one positive thought…followed by another.


Here’s my challenge to you. Ask yourself what you need to do to regain your own footing. Write all the action items down. They are different for all of us. Commit to that today and take the first step. You’ve heard me talk a lot about taking massive action, and I’m a big fan. Movement forward, even one small turtle step at a time works too. You’ll feel better with action.
